Among the first Protestant missionaries to reside in Shanghai were Walter H. Medhurst (麦都思) and his wife, Elizabeth Martin Braune Medhurst, who arrived in 1843. The Medhursts served in Malaysia and Indonesia for over two decades before moving to Shanghai. Walter Medhurst played a key role in the translation of the Delegates’ Bible. He left China due to poor health and died at age 60 on Jan. 24, 1857, shortly after reaching the U.K. Elizabeth passed away in 1874 and was survived by their son Walter, who was a British diplomat in China for many years.
