In early 1877, British missionary Timothy Richard (李提摩太) published gripping reports of his visit to famine-stricken Shanxi. Despite relief efforts spurred by those reports, the famine claimed 5.5 million lives in that province before ending in 1879. The son of one couple who became Christians at that time in Quwo County would become a noted pastor, David Yang Shoutang (杨绍唐牧师). In the 1930’s, God used Pastor Yang’s Spiritual Action Teams to bring revival to Shanxi. He later pastored churches in Nanjing and Shanghai before going to be with Lord in 1969 after many years of severe persecution. His tombstone in Quwo County said simply, God’s Faithful Servant, Pastor Yang Shaotang ( 神的忠仆杨绍唐牧师). Pray for pastors in Shanxi to have courage and strength in today’s challenging political climate. Hebrews 13:20-21 "Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen."
