On Jan. 7, 1885, Philip Zheng Hefu (郑和甫主教), China’s first Episcopalian bishop, was born into a poor family in Anhui. He was orphaned at age 14 and came under the care of Episcopalian missionaries. Zheng was baptized in 1901, and after being educated in mission schools in Anhui and Hubei, he was ordained as a priest in 1912; for a time, he was secretary of the interdenominational China for Christ movement. Pray for God, our Shield and Defender, to be glorified as Chinese believers in Anhui and Hubei manifest the joy that comes from being one in Him. Psalm 80:3 "Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved!"
