On Oct. 3, 1938, Christian writer and civic leader Guang Fuzhou passed away in Shanghai at age 69. Guang was born in 1869 into a poor family in rural Guangdong. He migrated to the US at age 12 and was soon baptized as a Christian. After several year of serving in the Salvation Army, he worked his way through college and graduate school before returning to China in 1906. He worked for over 20 years at the influential Commercial Press and authored many important textbooks. His significant role in helping to build a healthy civic society in Republican China was manifested in founding the Cantonese Union Church and in major responsibilities with the China Christian Educational Association, the National YMCA, and the International Rotary. Guang was survived by his wife, Lin Lian’en (Dr. Laura Lum) and five children; after 1949 they relocated to Hong Kong, Taiwan and the U.S. Pray for Christians in the business world in Guangdong and Shanghai to be salt and light. You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5:13-14
