(2/5/2019)

On Feb. 5, 1661, the Kangxi Emperor (康熙帝) began his 61-year reign at age 6. He developed a close relationship with Jesuit missionary Ferdinand Verbeist (南怀仁) and wrote poems showing a clear understanding of the gospel, e.g. "The Treasure of Life" and "A Poem of the Cross." Kangxi issued an Edict of Toleration in 1692, but reversed that in 1721 with a ban on Catholic missions as part of the Rites Controversy. Pray for Christians to be salt and light as they interact with government officials. Matthew 5:13-16 "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."
