On July 17, 2000, Shanghai house church pastor Philip Xu Guoxing (徐国兴) was released after serving his third prison sentence, and he would receive yet another sentence in 2002 for 18 months. Pastor Xu was born March 16, 1955 into a third-generation Christian family. Upon graduation from high school, Xu became a factory worker; he went to the U.S. in 1980 to study for a professional degree, but returned two years later after God called him to preach the gospel. His father warned him that his work would most likely result in arrest, but he replied that “I know this is God’s will, so I am even willing to go to jail, because many criminals need to repent and accept Jesus’ salvation.” In the next seven years, God used this young pastor to establish many house churches in Shanghai and to bring lost sinners to the Lord. Pray for him and for his wife and daughter as they walk with Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:26
